SSSTS refresh – Site supervisor Safety Training Scheme

The CITB SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) Refresher course is designed for delegates who have previously passed the 2-day SSSTS course. This includes team leadersforemengangers, first line managers, and supervisors in the construction sector who have supervisory responsibilities and a need to understand their legal duties.

How can I get an SSSTS Refresher Certificate?
To obtain an SSSTS Refresher Certificate, you need to follow these steps:

1. Eligibility: Ensure you have previously passed the 2-day SSSTS course and provide proof of this. Your current SSSTS or SSSTS Refresher certificate must not have expired. If it has, you’ll need to re-take the full two-day SSSTS course.
2. Enrollment: Enroll in the 1-day SSSTS Refresher course.
3. Attendance: Full attendance of all 7.5 hours is mandatory. You’ll be continually assessed during the course.
4. Course Content: The course aims to bring your knowledge up-to-date with the latest changes in legislation and how these affect site operations. It covers recent changes to legislation surrounding construction site health, safety, and welfare, how health and safety law is structured, why method statements are a legal requirement and how they work, how your role fits in with controlling site safety, in a safe manner, behavioural safety, occupational health supervision, and communication on a site and the routes available within site activity for effective communication.
5. Assessment: There is a multiple-choice assessment test at the end of the course.
6. Certification: Successful candidates will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, which is issued on completion and valid for 5 years.

If your SSSTS certificate is due to expire, you must undertake and successfully complete an SSSTS Refresher course to remain up-to-date and legal whilst working onsite. There is no longer a six-month grace period for expired certificates. The 1-day SSSTS Refresher course is designed to ensure those in a supervisory capacity are fully up to date with any legal changes, as well as how they affect site operations.

Entry Conditions:
Candidates must have previously passed the full 2-day SSSTS course and be able to provide proof of this. Additionally, a candidate’s current SSSTS or SSSTS Refresher certificate must not have expired. If it has, the candidate will need to re-take the full two-day SSSTS course.

The SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) certificate is a widely recognized qualification within the UK construction industry and is often a requirement for management roles on construction sites. It’s a part of the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Site Safety Plus Scheme, making CITB the awarding body. Successful candidates can use their SMSTS certificate qualification when applying for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card, another critical certification in the construction industry. The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years, after which it can be renewed with a refresher course.
